Polyester Webbing Sling, 5 t

The 5 ton web sling (Webbing Sling 5T) is a lifting sling made from 100% polyester fibre, tightly woven into a flat strap and made to EN 1492-1 : 2000, the European standard for flat woven webbing slings. Its Working Load Limit (WLL) is 5,000 kilograms in a straight lift, with a Safety Factor of 7:1, meaning the minimum breaking strength must be at least 35 tons, or 7 times the working load.

Compared with wire rope and chain slings, web slings are soft and do not scratch or dent the load surface, are light enough for one person to lift and wrap around a load, fold into a toolbox, do not rust and need no lubrication. They suit lifting machinery, automotive parts, stainless pipe and plated or painted goods. On the other hand, polyester does not resist sharp edges, so always use edge protection where the sling passes over corners or steel edges.

The actual lifting capacity changes with the hitch type, following the formula SWL = P x WLL on every sling label, and every size uses the international colour code so the rating can be seen from a distance. Red means 5 tons, which reduces the risk of picking the wrong size on site. Gavan stocks web slings from 1 to 10 tons, 1 to 10 metres long, with 5 tons the most popular size for general industry.

  • Discard criteria: withdraw from use immediately if the label is missing or unreadable, fibres are cut, melted by heat or show chemical damage
